This afternoon, while I was at work, I noticed the water container on the water cooler was empty. I had never put a new bottle of water on one of those machines before. Needless to say, it's not that easy to get that big bottle, filled with water up on top of the dispenser! When I lifted it up there, I felt like a real girl...my daughter would have had that up there in a second, without even flinching!
I've often heard that a lot of talk goes on around the water cooler. Wonder why they call it a water cooler, when most people are spending their time around the water cooler getting all steamed up about some issue. Just a random thought.
Our conversations are very important. Our words can build people up or they can tear them down. Are we builder's or are we the "demolition crew?"
The bible says, "The power of life and death are in the tongue." Tiny little words make pretty big impacts on the world around us. Often times we think our words are just some thoughts we are sharing between two people. Guess again! Our heavenly Father hears every word of it. Maybe the standard should be, would you say that if Jesus was standing there? It's something I am striving for, because I believe it's so important. I have not met that challenge fully, but it is a goal I have.
When I was in school, I used to hear kids say, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!" How wrong is that? Words do hurt...personally, there are times I just wish someone would hit me with a stick and just get it over with. Bruises on the outside seem to heal quicker than bruises on the inside.
I work in a Salon, and I hear every kind of conversation. Believe me, I have gotten an education in things I never wanted to learn! The words tumble all around each room, and they bounce here and there leaving little impressions and marks where ever they go. But I have to say there are also a lot of wonderful people out there that have been dear friends to me, and their kind words have helped me through many difficult days. There are also times when people's humorous words makes me "belly laugh!" Many days that's is what chases the blues away. Laughter is like a medicine. I thank my clients that enjoy having a good laugh, not a someone elses expense, but just observant in life, and find the humor in things. Special thanks to my friend, Mary S. who truly gets my sense of humor, and we have more fun and fill the salon with the sounds of joy! I also have to thanks my husband, Robert and my daughter, Leanna. They also love to laugh, and I enjoy spending time with them.
This area of words is hard for all of us. I know it's hard for me, but as I grow in Christ I have to allow the Holy Spirit to help me with this problem. As I said before, I don't claim to have this area sin-free. But it is my heart's desire to ask the Lord to search me and try me in this area, and see if there is any wicked way in me and for Him to say, "It's better than the last time I checked!" :)
So, when we get ready to say something, let it be something that makes the world a better place!
